To honor members of the public safety field who have died in the line of duty and those currently serving as first responders, St. Mary Catholic Church in Vermilion will celebrate a Blue Mass on Tuesday, September 29, at 7 p.m. Blue Masses have been an American Catholic tradition since 1934 and seek to honor law enforcement, firefighters, 911 operators and EMS personnel for their contribution to the local community. The date coincides with the feast of St. Michael the Archangel, patron saint of police officers and the military. The term “blue” denotes the blue uniforms used by many first responder agencies. While this event is a Catholic Mass, first responders and community members of all denominations are invited to attend in order for the community to show its gratitude. The Blue Mass will take place at St. Mary Catholic Church, 731 Exchange St., Vermilion, and begin at 7 p.m. Preceding the Mass will be Eucharistic adoration and benediction in the church, which all are invited to attend. Attendees are asked to obverse social distancing and mask-wearing guidelines.
